Troy Kotsur takes home Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for his performance in Apple Original Film “CODA”.

Today, the 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards announced that celebrated actor Troy Kotsur has been honored with the award for Best Supporting Male for his moving role in the Apple Original Film “CODA.” This comes a week after he was the first Deaf actor to win a SAG Award. This year’s in-person Spirit Awards ceremony returned to its home on the Santa Monica beach and was broadcast exclusively on IFC.

To date, Apple Original Films’ groundbreaking sensation “CODA” has received multiple significant and historic wins and nominations this awards season, following its debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where it landed a record-breaking four major awards as well. The film also recently received two Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, one for Kotsur for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role and another for SAG’s top prize of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and received four wins at the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) Awards, including the top prize for Best Picture, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for writer/director Siân Heder and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. Additionally, the three-time Academy Award-nominated film was recognized with an HCA Spotlight Award. The film also boasts three Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Kotsur, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

Celebrating creative independence, original, provocative subject matter, innovation and uniqueness of vision, the Film Independent Spirit Awards are positioned squarely in the corridor leading into Oscar voting. The Spirit Awards are the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit Film Independent’s year-round slate of programs, which cultivate the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Since the debut of Apple TV+ just over two years ago, Apple’s original series and films have earned 213 wins and 959 nominations and have recently received recognition from the Academy Awards, SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Critics Choice Documentary Awards, as well as past Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards, plus more.

About “CODA”

17-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones) is the sole hearing member of a deaf family – a CODA, child of deaf adults. Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working on the family’s struggling fishing boat every day before school with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant). But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself drawn to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Encouraged by her enthusiastic, tough-love choirmaster (Eugenio Derbez) to apply to a prestigious music school, Ruby finds herself torn between the obligations she feels to her family and the pursuit of her own dreams.

“CODA” is written and directed by Siân Heder, produced by Vendome Pictures and Pathé, with Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, Patrick Wachsberger and Jérôme Seydoux serving as producers, and Ardavan Safaee and Sarah Borch-Jacobsen as executive producers.

“CODA” is now streaming on Apple TV+.
