“The Good Boss” (El Buen Patrón) – Movie Review by Rafy Mediavilla (@Rmediavilla).
Básculas Blanco, a Spanish company producing industrial scales in a provincial Spanish town, awaits the imminent visit from a committee which holds its fate in their hands as to whether they merit a local Business Excellence award. Everything has to be perfect when the time comes. Working against the clock, the company’s proprietor, Blanco (Javier Bardem) pulls out all the stops to address and resolve issues with his employees, crossing every imaginable line in the process.
The Good Boss is an interesting project, to say the least, it’s satire yet it hides behind all its humor some interesting topics where if we take into consideration the movie was produced in Spain It is safe to say that the way corporations behave overall is a world problem. The social commentary behind the movie it’s clear we see the head of this company making sure everything works perfectly to win this award but at the same time, we see everything they do to hide or to move or to get rid of any problems that may raise any flags that would keep them to win this award.
We dive into all sorts of issues from personal problems coming into the office and becoming an issue for the company from past employees not being content with the way they got fired and causing a ruckus outside the office from the head of the company even getting in trouble himself like not fully doing his background search on who is he involved romantically within the company. And then we see all the way they go to try to fix or litigate or remove or get rid of all these issues to make sure Everything seems perfect.
Story-wise, what I clearly found fascinating from the movie considering this is a satire, whether we like it or not this is something that constantly happens in the corporate industries. I believe the truth that it hides behind all its humor is just something it will be a conversation started once you finish watching the movie.
Now diving into the whole technical aspect of the movie it’s well known that Spain It’s one of the best producers of picture films in the international scene in the movie industry. And The Good Boss is another perfect example of how much attention to detail Is there when it comes to production design when it comes to hairstyling and makeup. Regarding the performances even though the whole cast understood their role and there were integral parts of telling the story it is impossible to not recognize Javier Bardem’s performance as he clearly carried the film from start to finish.
Ultimately The Good Boss is a good time at the movies. Is a story with a lot of humor that hides a lot of truth behind it, and if that is not enough, Javier Bardem’s performance it’s well worth the price of admission.
