STEM Boxed Kits: Ciencia que llega a la puerta de tu hogar.
Este nuevo programa del Fideicomiso ofrecerá entregas de “kits” educativos
para fomentar la educación científica de los jóvenes a nivel local.
San Juan, Puerto Rico. 29 de junio de 2020 – Comenzando el próximo mes de julio, el Fideicomiso para Ciencia, Tecnología e Investigación de Puerto Rico implementará un nuevo programa educativo llamado STEM Boxed Kit Experience. Este servicio de entregas a domicilio busca promover interés en temas STEM (ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas, por sus siglas en inglés) a través del envío de cajas con actividades y materiales para el aprendizaje. Cada paquete incluirá herramientas científicas especializadas que fomentará la educación STEM a un máximo de 120 estudiantes.
Como respuesta a la situación actual de salud pública y ante la necesidad de nuevas formas para el aprendizaje a distancia, este programa busca ofrecer una alternativa física y táctil para aquellos jóvenes que les interese las materias científicas y tecnológicas. El Fideicomiso mediante su Programa de Educación STEM y la colaboración de Emergent Tools y la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte, diseñó dos “boxed kits” con temas distintos: ingeniería aplicada a la agricultura y realidad virtual aplicada al diseño 3D. Cada uno contempla aproximadamente una semana de duración para su montaje y ejecución. Los estudiantes se conectarán en sesiones remoto con facilitadores del programa varias veces a la semana mientras trabajan sus proyectos en el hogar.
“Actualmente, la educación en Puerto Rico está pasando por una etapa de transformación. Estamos siendo testigos de una nueva realidad enfocada en herramientas útiles para el aprendizaje a distancia. Por eso decidimos innovar en la manera que tradicionalmente llegamos a los estudiantes. A través de los STEM Boxed Kits, aquellos jóvenes que no pueden participar en campamentos de verano o talleres presenciales se podrán beneficiar de un aprendizaje accesible desde la comodidad de su hogar”, expresóJorge Valentine, director del programa educativo STEM del Fideicomiso.
El “boxed kit” enfocado en la Realidad Virtual y en el Diseño Tridimensional (3D) está dirigido a estudiantes de escuela superior. Esta caja incluirá varios materiales que fomentan la manipulación 3D, incluyendo un par de lentes “Google Cardboard VR”. Este le permitirá al estudiante trabajar y manejar la realidad virtual. Los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de conectarse con un facilitador experto en el área.
El segundo “boxed kit”, dirigido a estudiantes de escuela intermedia, estará enfocado en la Ingeniería aplicada a la Agricultura. En este caso, la caja incluirá herramientas para la elaboración de varios proyectos, incluyendo prototipos hidropónicos miniatura y sistemas de movilización (cintas transportadoras, conocidas como “conveyor belts” en inglés), entre otros equipos especializados.
En total, 120 estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de participar. El programa estará dividido en 60 participantes por semana. Los interesados tienen hasta el miércoles 8 de julio de 2020 para registrarse. Espacios disponibles mientras duren.

STEM Boxed Kits: Science delivered to your front door
This new Trust program will offer deliveries of educational “kits”
to promote the scientific education of young people at the local level.
San Juan Puerto Rico. June 29, 2020 – Beginning next July, the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust will implement a new educational program called STEM Boxed Kit Experience. This home delivery service seeks to promote interest in STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) by sending boxes with activities and learning materials. Each package will include specialized scientific tools that will promote STEM education to a maximum of 120 students.
In response to the current public health situation and the need for new forms of distance learning, this program seeks to offer a physical and tactile alternative for those young people who are interested in scientific and technological subjects. The Trust, through its STEM Education Program and the collaboration of Emergent Tools and North Carolina State University, designed two “boxed kits” with different themes: engineering applied to agriculture and virtual reality applied to 3D design. Each one contemplates approximately a week of duration for its assembly and execution. Students will connect in remote sessions with program facilitators several times a week as they work on their projects at home.
“Currently, education in Puerto Rico is going through a stage of transformation. We are witnessing a new reality focused on useful tools for distance learning. So, we decided to innovate in the way that we traditionally reach students. Through the STEM Boxed Kits, those young people who cannot participate in summer camps or face-to-face workshops will be able to benefit from accessible learning from the comfort of their home, ”said Jorge Valentine, director of the STEM educational program of the Trust.
The boxed kit focused on Virtual Reality and Three-Dimensional Design (3D) is aimed at high school students. This box will include various materials that promote 3D manipulation, including a pair of “Google Cardboard VR” glasses. This will allow the student to work and manage virtual reality. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with an expert facilitator in the area.
The second boxed kit, aimed at middle school students, will focus on Engineering applied to Agriculture. In this case, the box will include tools for the preparation of various projects, including miniature hydroponic prototypes and mobilization systems (conveyor belts), among other specialized equipment.
In total, 120 students will have the opportunity to participate. The program will be divided into 60 participants per week. Those interested have until Wednesday, July 8, 2020 to register. Spaces available while they last.
