Jurassic Park Dominion: Is it really “epic” ? – Movie Review by Ana Sofía Cintrón (@Ana_Sofia53). #JurassicWorldDominion #JurassicWorld
Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park was a groundbreaking achievement. From their practical effects to John Williams’ score, the movie has defined itself as a major milestone in film history. With the sudden urge to revive franchises, Hollywood these days seems to be cruising in the nostalgic wave. It was no surprise that in 2015 this classic franchise got targeted for a revival. Now two movies later in 2022 we have the end of the saga with Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion.
Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live and hunt alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures in a new Era.
Recently, rewatching the last two films, I felt a mix of emotions. The first one had established good ideas, while the second one did a huge turn and kinda crushed it. Marketed as “The Epic Conclusion of the Jurassic Era” Jurassic World: Dominion needed to raise the bar and bring the excitement back to this bumpy franchise to earn the title of being “epic”.
At the start, they show you the repercussions of the second film. A world where dinosaurs and humans have to coexist which each other. Of course, not everything is rainbows and butterflies; showing how their presence affects the ecosystem. It’s a pretty interesting concept if you ask me. However, to my surprise, the focus wasn’t actually on the dinosaurs but rather a genetically engineered insects. Being in the Jurassic Universe, you would expect that the main focus would be the dinosaurs; yet when it was, it was highly entertaining.
On the other hand, we got introduced to new characters that it felt that they were created for the sake of moving the plot. By the end of the first act, they were easily disposed of and treated like they weren’t there in the first place. At times, the story shifts abruptly, and it feels that we are seeing multiple plots that aren’t just equally distributed. The dinosaurs felt like more like a side story rather than the actual focal point. On the back of my mind I was constantly saying“ Give me more dinosaurs!”
Now, what exactly did I liked about Jurassic World: Dominion? Well, one thing for sure was bringing the whole OG Trio (Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum) and back for one last adventure was the greatest decision they ever made. Compare to the other two, this was more in sync with 1993 Jurassic Park. The third act of the film will definitely be a crowed pleaser. There are a lot of references from the original that only fans would understand. Seeing the two groups interacting together was pretty fun. However, the star of the show was Jeff Goldblum. Adding a little spice to the movie with his witty jokes and sarcastic tone.
Titled as the grand conclusion of this trilogy, Jurassic World: Dominion doesn’t feel like the epic finale that it was promised. With not enough direction and focus, as a trilogy, it runs out of fumes midway. Now, as a film, it is far from a perfect one. At times, it could be quite cheesy & a bit messy, but bringing the OG trio back makes it worth it. When they finally put the spotlight on the dinosaurs, they provided great action sequences that made it thrilling to see. But at the end of the day, Jurassic World: Dominion serves its only purpose, and that is to entertain you for a couple of hours.
