“American Carnage” Movie Review by Rafy Mediavilla (@Rmediavilla). #AmericanCarnageMovie
After a governor issues an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants, the newly detained youth are offered an opportunity to have their charges dropped by volunteering to provide care to the elderly. Once inside the eldercare facility, the volunteers discover the governor and the facility’s supervisor have cooked up a horrifyingly depraved conspiracy that endangers the young and the old in this twisted thriller-comedy.
American Carnage is a movie that completely took me by surprise, it really has a lot of things that are absolutely going right for it. From the amazing performance by the secondary cast which includes Allen Maldonado and Bella Ortiz, the unique entertaining way they handle the social commentary, and the way they use practical effects that you can help but see how much a filmmaker was inspired by Sam Raimi’s work.
For context story wise I’ve have to describe this movie as something in between
Get Out” from Jordan Peele and of course Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead”. The movie is billed as a mystery thriller comedy and this time I believe they used all genres perfectly. Well by the second act tube begin to understand what’s really happening here, I truly commend what the film makers did with the social commentary explaining how the government sees us immigrants and how they used us for. With a plus 90 minute runtime, there is so much craziness happening at the same time that times just flies by because of how much you fun your having While watching this extremely intelligent film.
Performance wise the all Hispanic cast was great. And while at a glance the only name that really stands out is Jenna Ortega, when it’s all said and the performance That truly stands out where Bella Ortiz Alan McDonald. Bella with such a young career absolutely took me by surprise with her performance by keeping you out of the loop on where do you think her character may go. Regarding Allen Maldonado, it got to be my surprise how his character ended by the last act. He brought in the physical comedy and stole the show with it. I absolutely loved the fact that he played a Puerto Rican him being a Puerto Rican for real, you could clearly see his Puerto Rican side on his performance from beginning to end.
In the end “American Carnage” is a fun movie with amazing performances and a really intelligent message behind it. Film makers truly use all the elements from comedy and from thrillers and from horrors that worked, and in my opinion, it can easily become a cult classic for these times. Saban Films Just added and amazing story to their catalog. One that I consider I must watch.
