Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
It is no secret that I’m not the biggest MCU fan and I am overly critical of these films mostly because Marvel has already established a formula that defines them. And as I mentioned before In every single movie of every single MCU film that has been released since the end of Endgame there’s something about these movies Where the spark that ultimately drove the stories is not there anymore and “The Marvels” is no exception to this situation.
Story-wise I have a lot of trouble putting my finger on what this movie is really about Beyond just seeing finally these three women together in one place fighting for a common cause. to me this movie feels like a sequel to another movie that we did not see specifically when regarding Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel’s there were so many things that happened in the story that are underdeveloped that I just get lost in what the hell am I watching or why am I watching this war or where are we going with this that I’m just in awe of how this organized this movie feels.
And yes, the genesis of the problems that plague the last couple of Phases regarding the MCU can be pinpointed at the overlay-saturated content that Marvel is releasing between theaters and Disney Plus I do blame Disney in not having any idea on how to fix or deal with the situation. Since clearly people have grown tired of having to watch four or five TV series to connect the dots between the stories within the films. And ultimately the Marvel story falls short because of it if you are not caught up with WandaVision or Ms Marvel, I strongly suggest getting caught up before walking into a theater.
Performance-wise, Is another tough pill to swallow and I do not blame the actors themselves they did what they could with a script of a story that was underdeveloped. A movie that should be focused on Captain Marvel as the main character ends up being a movie that feels more like I Ms Marvel sequel than anything else. If anything is Iman Valleni’s performance as Ms Marvel who truly shines and carries this film from start to finish, and I would add her family as a supporting actors, who also did a great job at carrying the story. Even Goose the Cat added more depth to the story with the role of the final act that their supposed principal characters. Again I do not blame the actors, Tayonah Parris who plays Monica Rambeau had one hell of a responsibility in continuing to develop her character from what happened in one direction to this movie. With Brie Larson, it seems that we see a different type of Captain Marvel in this one someone that we have not seen before to the point that I believe that the changes that we see in this movie with her character have come from somewhere else this is why the way her active developed within this movie requires another movie to understand why she is who she is right now.
For example and spoilers ahead apparently Captain Marvel is married yet this is something that comes out of the blue and we have no clue how it happened so it just happened. I have this same issue with the main villain of the story, the beef between Dar-Benn and Captain Marvel is underdeveloped so I don’t care about the repercussions given in the past we have been made to believe that Captain Marvel was this powerful person. Furthermore, Samuel Jackson a Nick Fury feels completely out of place in the story given the events that took place in the TV series Secret Invasion.
Regarding the end credit scenes all I’m going to say is the one that comes after the movie ends had me jumping out of my seat for more personal reasons than anything else because I absolutely love but it’s going to happen with these characters and the end credit scene will have everyone jumping for joy given you grew up loving this group of Marvel characters which I know a lot of people have
In the end, it seems as if we are only coming to theaters and sitting through these movies only to get hyped by the end credits scenes. What puzzles me is that this film coming out at the tail end of phase 5 of the MCU Multiverse Saga yet you still don’t have a clear North of where the story is going, which we end up leaving a theater with mixed feelings of what we can expect next.
