“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” Movie Review by @Rafy Mediavilla (@Rmediavilla) #DnDMovie
A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.
First, let me say I had zero expectations, but a lot of hype came into the theater for the screening of this movie and while running time is certainly questionable, I came out completely surprised at how entertained I was by this whole story and how it played out on the big screen. Even if you aren’t familiar with the concept of this board game, the writers and directors Jonathan M. Goldstein, John Francis Daley did one hell of a job turning this movie into an extremely fun family-driven adventure.
From the outside, the thing that stands out the most is the superb casting, once sit throughout the whole 2 hrs. and 15 min runtime you will surely come out saying this was a really fun popcorn flick for the whole family to enjoy. And work here is how well-balanced is the humor of the story between the action-packed moments. Which I feel it will also spark the curiosity of many to try out the board game in real life just to see If it plays out as fun as it did in the movie. While story-wise the puzzles of the game played out as expected, the underlying story on how it was told did have some glaring holes that weren’t developed fully, mainly with Hugh Grant and Daisy Head’s characters’ development felt rushed out in order to have a villain in the story.
Performances were great all-around. Chris Pine character Edgin had many funny and emotional written in the story alongside Chloe Coleman who played her daughter Kira. Michelle Rodriguez was superb as the badass Holga, she definitely carried the film in the physical action scenes. The chemistry between actor Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis was also very going as the charming and lovingly wizards of the story. Once again if anything I wanted to see more of Hugh Grant and Daisy Head characters who sadly as very underdeveloped.
If you are a fan of the Wizardly World of Harry Potter, and the Lord of the Ring franchise, or anything related or close to resembles these fantasy action-adventure stories, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will scratch that itch and maybe it may entertain you a bit more. Ultimately Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves gets the job done by being a light-hearted family adventure-driven fun time at the movies.
