New De Niro comedy, About My Father, hits local cinemas soon

Get ready for a hilarious and heartfelt comedy that explores the complexities of family dynamics.

ABOUT MY FATHER, starring the legendary Robert De Niro and loosely based on the life of Italian-American stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, is set to grace local screens from 26 May 2023!

Directed by the acclaimed Laura Terruso, the film follows the story of Sebastian (played by Maniscalco) and his father Salvo (portrayed by De Niro). Salvo, a headstrong Italian-American hairdresser, clashes with his son’s efforts to impress his girlfriend Ellie’s (Leslie Bibb) – whom he is planning to propose to – affluent and slightly eccentric family.

The drama begins when Salvo joins Sebastian for a Fourth of July getaway at Ellie’s family’s summer estate. Coming from a first-generation immigrant background, Salvo’s traditional values clash with those of Ellie’s wealthy and affectionate family, resulting in a weekend of cultural and generational clashes with surprising outcomes.

Inspired by Maniscalco’s own experience of meeting his wife’s family, ABOUT MY FATHER captures the essence of two families from different socioeconomic backgrounds colliding during a holiday weekend and discovering that their differences make them unique. While the film delivers wild and hilarious scenes, it also embraces heartfelt emotions and warmth.

Alongside Maniscalco and De Niro, the film features an incredible ensemble cast, including Kim CattrallDavid RascheBrett Dier, and Anders Holm as Sebastian’s soon-to-be in-laws.

According to co-writer Austen Earl, ABOUT MY FATHER can not only be described as a romantic comedy, but also a film about the relationship between a man and his father. Sebastian’s journey from finding his father embarrassing to realizing his father’s significant influence on his own identity forms the core of this heart-warming story.

Ultimately, ABOUT MY FATHER reinforces the importance of family and love, reminding us to bridge the gaps that sometimes arise within our own families.

“Everybody has a family member they may clash with, but at the end of the day, it’s all about family; it’s all about loving one another,” Maniscalco concludes.

The film is distributed locally by Filmfinity Pty (Ltd.) and can be seen at the following cinemas:
