The Mojo Manifesto: The Life and Times of Mojo Nixon, World Premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival on March 16th at 2:00pm at the Stateside Theatre. As part of the “24 Beats Per Second” category, the documentary feature film tells the story of legendary cult musician Mojo Nixon and his rise to fame during the golden years of MTV. This definitive film offers a peek behind the curtain of the controversial musician that has spawned a rabid cult following, who has stuck by him through thick and thin.

Neill Kirby McMillan Jr. comes of age in Danville, VA, listening to records from his father’s soul radio station and plotting his escape from the confines of conservative small town life. On a bicycle trip across the country, Kirby experiences The Mojo Revelation and becomes Mojo Nixon, a primitive blues-inspired musician. Mojo then teams up with the enigmatic Skid Roper to form an outrageous duo. Relentless touring, a record deal, college radio airplay, and MTV exposure lead to unexpected mainstream success. The song “Elvis Is Everywhere” is a cult phenomenon, but his next single “Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child” is banned by MTV and Mojo faces a decision that could jeopardize his career…“had I given in, then I wouldn’t be Mojo.”

Includes interviews with Jim Dickinson, Country Dick Montana, Todd Snider, Steve Poltz, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Bill Davis, John Doe, Luther Dickinson and Winona Rider.

The Mojo Manifesto: The Life and Times of Mojo Nixon is directed and edited by first time feature film director Matt Eskey, who is also the bass player in the band and first-hand witness to all the mayhem. Executive Producer is Paul Reilly, with Producers Sal Owen and Eva Radke.
