Interview by Rafy Mediavilla with Mr. Krabs & SpongeBob voice actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) about Nickelodeon SpongeBob SquarePants “The Tidal Zone”. Premiering Friday, January 13 on Nickelodeon!
SpongeBob SquarePants Presents The Tidal Zone is a journey into an hour of television where two dimensions can become three, and French divers can wear black ties. Observe a tale of both comedy and caution, of satire and stupidity. Minds may switch, bodies may shrink, and robots may rise in…”The Tidal Zone.”
Criticólogos:
If you personally could choose a scenario of The Tidal Zone to get stuck in, which one would it be and why?
Clancy Brown:
The Tidal Zone. I think we did get stuck the in the robot episode. We all became part of Sandy Zardoz’s head which, which was cool. And nobody seemed to be too miserable to be up there, you know, except for Squidward. He’s always miserable. But, you know, we straighten him right out. You know.
Tom Kenny:
Well, I would say, you know, the Twilight Zone, the show, The Twilight Zone always had those moments where something was wrong. Like Twilight Zone was always about something’s not right. Like, Hello, Hello? Wait, what’s that newspaper? What’s the date today? This is it, right? Yeah. You know, you knock on the door of your old childhood home, and a different lady answer. Mom, don’t you know me? Do you know? And yeah, when you’re Patrick Star, pretty much every day is like that, you know, to me, like so Patrick got who lives in the tidal zone all the time. I think it was an easy transition for him.
But yeah, it was fun. This is one of our crazier moments on this show. One of our crazier aspirations was to try and take all three of these series that are all going at the same time and somehow have the crews of those shows and each do a segment that makes sense. It was a lot of, you know, nuts and bolts, and they did it beautifully. And it’s fun. We must be us; you know, we must be Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob. They are always who they are.
And what’s happening around us could get as weird as the writers can make it. And, you know, Nickelodeon is blessedly very good at just letting these guys do, you know, get as crazy as they want without a whole lot of which.
Criticólogos:
Mr. Krabs has a fun episode when basically his mentality gets switched around. So, I wonder if you to make the request. What other requests would you have made to Mr. Krabs before ending the episode?
Clancy Brown:
Oh, gosh. What would I say to Mr. Krabs? I would say, let your employees unionize. Let your employees unionize. Great. I like it if.
Criticólogos:
What characteristic of your specific character is the thing that helped them survive The Tidal Show?
Tom Kenny:
Well, I think just hyperkinetic, hyper kineticism, and just, you know, just happiness just naivete, and hyperactivity can get you pretty much through everything.
Clancy Brown:
And Mr. Krabs, it’s about focusing on the bottom line every time you just focus on the bottom line.
Criticólogos:
Tom, I know you directed all episodes, you directed the actors. I wonder what the process of was getting them into the mindset of the characters in each different scenario. Did it change from the series to this special?
Tom Kenny:
It didn’t, because part of the fun of the world around them getting crazy is that people know these characters very well. They know who SpongeBob is. They know what he acts like. They know Patrick Squidward, Mr. Krabs. And so, part of it is the fun for the audience is seeing these characters that they know very well, and then throwing those characters into even more craziness than usual and, you know, kind of kind of predicting how the characters are going to react because the characters are always who they are you know, they’re very much written in stone, They’re very iconic, and that doesn’t change the world around them. So, you can put them anywhere. So, our approach as actors is pretty much just the same. And like Clancy said, none of these characters really get too freaked out by what was happening around them. You know, it’s just kind of like a slightly weirder day than usual, but not that much.
