Based on the LGBTQIA+ manga by the same name, The Stranger by the Shore follows the love story of two young men who meet on the beach: Shun (voice by Taishi Murata/Josh Grelle), an aspiring novelist, and Mio (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka/Justin Briner), a grieving young man. Each day, they grow closer. However, Mio decides to leave the island. Three years have passed, and they meet up again with the surprise of Mio confessing to Shun. Will he be able to accept Mio’s feelings?
Personally, I wasn’t familiar with the source material, which has led me to many surprises. To start off, the film is beautifully animated & visually pleasing to see. The color palette really did help out, embodying what seems to be a story filled with heartwarming moments. The characters’ designs were not too far from it, either. Each of them has their own little charm and is easy to like. Even I was enchanted by the secondary character, which left me wanting to see more of them.
The movie is only 59 minutes long, which if you think of it, it’s not your ordinary runtime. If you don’t know how to manage the time well, it could lead to pacing issues. Watching the relationship develop so fast, it became rushed, and it didn’t leave the story to breathe a little.
However, despite its pacing issues, it knew how to handle and shift the tones gracefully, from having adorable moments to handling serious topics such as internalized homophobia and self-acceptance. It was able to find the perfect balance for the story.
The Stranger by the Shore is a story that started as a love in a summer breeze to a journey of finding yourself. It’s fluffy, adorable, and surprisingly sensual.
The Stranger by the Shore will officially arrive at Funimation on July 9, in sub & dub format.

Basada en el manga LGBTQIA+ del mismo nombre, The Stranger by the Shore sigue la historia de amor de dos jóvenes que se conocen en la playa: Shun (voz de Taishi Murata/Josh Grelle), un aspirante a novelista, y Mio (voz de Yoshitsugu Matsuoka/Justin Briner), un joven afligido. Cada día están más unidos. Sin embargo, Mio decide abandonar la isla. Han pasado tres años y se reencuentran con la sorpresa de que Mio se confiesa con Shun. ¿Será capaz de aceptar los sentimientos de Mio?
Personalmente, no conocía el material de origen, lo que me ha llevado a muchas sorpresas. Para empezar, la película está bellamente animada y es visualmente agradable de ver. La paleta de colores realmente ayuda, encarnando lo que parece ser una historia llena de momentos reconfortantes. Los diseños de los personajes tampoco se quedan atrás. Cada uno de ellos tiene su propio encanto y es fácil de querer. Incluso me encantó el personaje secundario, que me dejó con ganas de ver más de ellos.
La película sólo dura 59 minutos, que si lo piensas, no es una duración normal. Si no se sabe gestionar bien el tiempo, puede dar lugar a problemas de ritmo. Al ver que la relación se desarrolla tan rápido, se precipita y no deja que la historia respire un poco.
Sin embargo, a pesar de sus problemas de ritmo, supo manejar y cambiar los tonos con gracia, desde tener momentos adorables hasta tratar temas serios como la homofobia interiorizada y la autoaceptación. Fue capaz de encontrar el equilibrio perfecto para la historia.
The Stranger by the Shore es una historia que comenzó como un amor en una brisa de verano a un viaje para encontrarse a sí mismo. Es esponjosa, adorable y sorprendentemente sensual.
